Event: Stop me when I get to 23: An examination of why we shouldn't get behind the wheel

About the event

The invention of the motor vehicle marked the introduction of a machine for which evolution had not prepared us to either control adequately at modern design speeds, or in which to survive the consequences of 'getting it wrong' whilst driving.   

This presentation gives an overview into how we are neither physiologically nor psychologically adapted to driving. Advances in vehicle design highlight that the automotive industry is now playing 'catch up' in putting our chances of safe driving in our favour.

Following a career in Sussex Police and within the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit, Mark has undertaken a role with the Transport Research Laboratory, in a similar field. With his particular interest and studies in the human factors surrounding our performance and capabilities in driving, Mark will offer a different angle on how we really should not get behind the wheel.
