The IMI would like to announce the introduction of a new qualification to the AutoStart Programme:
This qualification, which features on the Department for Education (DfE) 2014 Key Stage 4 Performance Tables, is an additional qualification to those already outlined as suitable for the AutoStart Programme. The qualification consists of 3 mandatory generic engineering based units and the choice of 3 optional units from a bank of specialised engineering units. However, in order to fit in with the AutoStart programme, the 3 optional units have been prescribed below as they must be focused on motor vehicle maintenance and repair:
Motor vehicle maintenance safety practices
Motor vehicle maintenance techniques
Motor vehicle maintenance planning
The other qualifications that have been outlined as suitable for the AutoStart are:
Between 10 to 20 days motor vehicle work experience will take place to give the learner an opportunity to experience the real world of work in a motor vehicle environment and also a chance to put the knowledge and skills they have learned through their VRQ qualification into practice.
As part of the AutoStart Programme the IMI will provide resources to assist with work experience. We are re-developing our current work experience resources to provide work experience organisers, employers and students with relevant and up-to-date guidance to support the work experience process. We are bringing together best practice from previous automotive work experience guides to produce 3 short easy to use guides, one for organisers, one for employers and one for students. These new resources will cover the whole of the UK and can be used for work experience students on any programme of any age at any level.
If you would like to view the work experience resources, you can download them in the 'Downloads' section to the right. Please note that the work experience resources are currently in draft format as they are with designers who are adding graphics and branding the documents to enhance the look and feel.
Added enrichment will be delivered via the IMI's family of Headlight products, which are free curriculum-linked teacher and student resources, focussing on building the learners skills in Mathematics and Literacy by contextualising to the motor industry. More information on the family of Headlight products can be found on the AUTOCity website.
Learners will focus on developing their CV writing and interviewing skills via a number of resources available on the brand new HUBcap website.
Each learner will also be registered free of charge onto 1st Gear, which is an online community for 13-16 years olds that provides access to all of the latest industry news and careers information. More information on 1st Gear can be found on the AUTOcity website.
In the 'Downloads' section to the right of this page is a flyer outlining the AutoStart programme, which can be downloaded and used for marketing purposes if desired
The AutoStart pilot began at the beginning of September 2012 with a number of partnerships involved in England as well as Northern Ireland. Early feedback from the partnerships is that the delivery of the programme is going very well so far and that the learners are really enjoying it.
