National Occupational Standards for the Automotive Glazing Sector
Consultation August 2012

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has been working with industry experts to update and improve the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for both Mobile Autoglazing Technicians and Bodyshop Autoglazing Technicians.

What are National Occupational Standards?

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are developed by industry, for industry. Each major industry in the UK has an organisation like IMI that researches and writes NOS using employers, associations and industry experts. In our industry, NOS are really important: we used them to develop the ATA (Automotive Technician Accreditation) scheme which many companies use as a means of compliance with PAS 125, and Apprenticeships and qualifications for staff in all areas of the motor trade.

NOS describes:

what automotive glazing technicians should be able to do
the standard they must achieve
the essential knowledge and understanding they need.

NOS describe best practice, and companies can freely use them to help design their in-house training, on-job coaching or performance management systems.

Your Chance to Contribute

What we have at the moment is draft. We are hoping the industry will give us feedback and help make the NOS even better. This is your chance to have your say. You can find a copy of our NOS Consultation Survey under the 'Downloads' section of this page. The questions contained within that document will be easy to fill in. There are only 6 questions and you can decide how much detail you want to go into. Question 4 gives you the chance to comment on individual NOS, if you wish to. The full detail of the NOS is in a separate document: ‘Consultation NOS August 2012’.

Even if you are happy with the proposed NOS, please complete the first sections of the questionnaire. It helps to show support and we need that to get the NOS approved.
