Rob Edwards first to re-accredit using ATA Assessed Outcome Module (AOM)

Cardiff and Vale College have passed the first Senior Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET) Technician in the UK using the new ATA re-accreditation Assessed Outcome Module (AOM) option. 41 year-old Rob Edwards travelled 270 miles and around five hours to get to the College from Norwich in the county of Norfolk to sit his re-accreditation.

Rob is currently working in the accident repair sector of the industry and has been working for family business East Bilney Coachworks, based in Norfolk, for around two years as a mechanic. He also covers all aspects of the MET role.

“Having passed the re-accreditation I feel that I can carry my ATA card with pride,” said Rob. “Customers know that a fully qualified person is working on their car which will give them peace of mind that their car is being well looked after.”

The ATA MET route is intended for technicians whose job role involves the repair of vehicles typically involved in accidents or similar incident circumstances. In the Senior MET re-assessment, Rob had to complete the following four modules: Supplementary Restraint System Scan Tools, MET Complex, Vehicle Electrical Complex Fault Finding, and Four Wheel Alignment Interpretation of Data. The four modules assessed the competence of the candidate’s knowledge, skill and ability in tasks such as diagnosing a complex electrical fault, removing and refitting a vehicles exterior and interior trim without damaging either the vehicle bodywork or its systems and interpreting data from a vehicle four wheel alignment / geometry report.

Rob said: “The assessment involved in depth tests on quite a few different aspects of the MET role. I found this to be a far better test for re-accreditation having already covered a lot of the 'more basic' tests on the original assessment some 5 years ago. Cardiff and Vale College had been used previously by my employer over the years for other members of staff's accreditations and that’s why I came to the College to do my re-accreditation. The staff made me feel a lot more relaxed at what would normally be a very stressful time.”

Rob has been working in the Automotive industry for 25 years. He wanted a career in the auto industry after having a love and fascination for cars from a very young age. He said, “I am very pleased to have been the first person to have passed the Senior MET ATA re-accreditation and look forward to being the first person to pass their re-re-accreditation In three years time, hopefully at Cardiff and Vale College once again.”

Tim Davis, Motor Vehicle lecturer at Cardiff and Vale College who ran the assessment said: “Rob is a very competent and confident technician and his experience shone through during the examination. Cardiff and Vale College was the only centre in the UK to offer the new Assessed Outcome Modules at the time, hence why Rob travelled all the way from Norfolk to take his re-accreditation.”

After passing the assessments and several online tests at Cardiff and Vale College, Rob then sat one of the remaining online examinations at his local college.
