National Occupational Standards (NOS) are developed by industry, for industry. Each major industry in the UK has an organisation like the IMI that researches and writes NOS using employers, associations and industry experts. In our industry, NOS are really important as they are used to develop qualifications and subsequently Apprenticeship frameworks as well as the IMI Accreditation (formerly ATA) scheme for staff in all areas of the motor industry.
NOS describe what an individual in a certain role should be able to do, the standard they must achieve and the essential knowledge as well as the understanding they need. All in all NOS describe best practice, and companies can freely use them to help design their in-house training, on-the-job coaching or performance management systems.
The IMI is carrying out consultation with employers, associates and industry experts across the UK in all four nations. A number of face to face meetings (Expert Working Groups) along with electronic consultation will take place across all four nations in order to give an opportunity to review and where required revise/update the current NOS to reflect the needs of the industry. The IMI welcomes all who wish to participate and would be grateful to receive feedback.
If you would like to take part in consultation on any of the NOS listed then please contact either Laura Beattie (firstname.lastname@example.org – 01992 519 039) or Cara Taylor (email@example.com – 01992 519 039)
