IMI Accreditation

IMI Accreditation provides individuals with proof of current competence for their automotive abilities using skills and knowledge-based assessments.

About IMI Accreditation


IMI Accreditation is governed by the IMI, providing recognition for current competence and commitment to an ethical code of conduct.
To achieve IMI Accreditation, individuals must pass a series of practical and knowledge assessments at an IMI approved centre. Accreditations are valid for a period of three years.



Management accreditation assesses a variety of core competencies that a manager should be proficient in. Undertaking a management accreditation enables individuals to receive recognition for their skills at one of three management levels, relative to the type of role they work in. IMI Accredited Assessor


The IMI Accredited Assessor Award is designed for individuals who are directly involved in the assessment process of IMI Accreditation.



Technical accreditation routes focus on the light vehicle area of the sector, which includes cars, vans and motorcycles. There are 14 technical routes from Air Conditioning and Cosmetic Repair to Electric Vehicle, Light Vehicle Inspection and VDA. All routes are updated regularly to ensure they meet legislative, technological and best practice working requirements. Customer-facing accreditations provide individuals with independent validation of their skills that is recognised by both their employer and the wider sector. Routes include Customer Service, Parts and Sales. Find out more about customer-facing accreditations.



IMI work in partnership with the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE) to deliver Heavy Vehicle Accreditation, irtec.

irtec is an independent accreditation scheme that provides proof of current competence for those working on commercial vehicles, trailers and passenger-carrying vehicles. Individuals are entered onto the irtec register post accreditation upon completion and the accreditation remains valid for 5 years. Find out more about irtec.
